The importance and relevance of the recycling industry to the environment continue to increase. This was particularly evident to the RED team on a visit to a DEC (DEME Environmental Contractors) soil and sediment recycling centre in Flanders, Belgium.

The eight-hectare site on the banks of the River Scheldt at Zwijndrecht, near Antwerp recycles 80,000 tonnes of sludge per year. The forward-thinking company has purchased a fleet of Hitachi hybrid excavators. These turn the layers of sludge and then break up the materials as they are neatly piled in rows to accelerate the drying process through oxidation.
