If there’s one country RED always enjoys visiting, it’s Norway. This time, Glenn and Andy were the lucky ones representing Hitachi Construction Machinery (Europe) NV (HCME) in Scandinavia. However, the guys had a busy schedule, with three construction companies to visit. Luckily, they were joined by a long-time friend of RED, the ever-helpful and delightful Jannike from HCME’s authorised Norwegian dealer Nasta.
Amazing recycling initiatives
First up was a trip to see Lindum and its amazing recycling plant just outside the city of Drammen. Norway has always been ahead of the game in terms of green initiatives. Lindum are achieving fantastic things in terms of waste handling. There are many lessons we could learn from our Scandinavian cousins in the UK, and it certainly shows that creativity cannot be overlooked.
Kicking-off a football project
Anyone who’s played on an artificial football pitch would have been fascinated by the work of Nasta’s next customer – Bane og Entreprenørservice. Bane are one of the few contractors in Norway who refurbish synthetic sports fields. Their projects usually require precise construction machinery. The team also found out how Bane had helped to redevelop a football pitch in a Brazilian favela for local children – a remarkable (and emotional) achievement.
During the occasional moments of downtime, there was much to appreciate about this fine country. There was plenty to enjoy about the cuisine. Even down to the roadside ‘biff burgers’, which were a particular favourite with the guys! It was also a pleasant experience to be housed in Drammen. The city has enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent times.
Laying the groundworks
A visit to contractor Gultvedt rounded off what had been an excellent week in Norway. At the time of RED’s visit, it was laying the groundwork for hundreds of new apartments on the outskirts of Oslo. Demand is so high for the homes that they had all been sold before a single brick had been laid. Gultvedt was utilising Hitachi’s impressive new ZX490LCH-6 excavator to get the job done.
